My father has medals from his father Frederick Gibbs.I can not find his name on any of the units. He was a member of the royal horse artillery. My father when he was younger had a book titled the war in south Africa with a photo of Fredrick Gibbs on riding the lead horse. Could any one give me any info where I could find military records.

Do you have his regimental number?. It would be on all/most army documents, as well on the edge of his campaign medals.

I have found a "F Gibbs" Regt. No. 33654 RANK "Gunner" in the 1899-1902 Boer War, in the ? Battery, RHA (Royal Horse Artillery).

This was found in 'Ancestry.com'.

That is him just spoke to my dad he has not found the hiding spot for the medals yet. He did find a dog tag like bracelet. It is a chain with an oval plate attached. he thinks the plate is made of stainless steel he's not sure of the metal type. on the tag it lists F.Gibbs 33654 R.H.A. cofe.
a few questions for you. what is cofe ( we think it could be Church of England) what was the tag used for and what type of metal is it made of.
