Hi my first post, I am researching my great grandfathers (Horace Sydney Alloway Crosby) part in the Boer war and have found his details in Kitcheners Horse nominal roll (2). In the last column of the roll is the word Super anybody know what this means.

many thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

I thinks that's an abbreviation for supernumerary, ie he ceased to be a regular member of KH on that date that has been lost on the page. I guess the supernumerary men must have stayed with the unit in some capacity otherwise they would have been discharged?

The QSA roll (WO100/256p26) show CC and OFS clasps, record he was discharged 24 Apr 1901 and that the QSA was issued to him 18 Jul 1902.

His KSA roll entry (WO100/256p96) records his entitlement to the SA01 clasp and gives an address of 73 West Dock Avenue, Hull.

There are attestation papers for KH in WO126/83-88 which may give you a little more information.

Hi David.....

Have read about this man and on the KSA roll he is only entitled to the 1901 bar..... Would this be one of the rare single bar KSA's? or would he have been just sent the bar for his QSA?

Hi Mike,

From his service he would not have been entitled to the KSA.

I have seen on the IY KSA rolls a number of entries crossed through because the guy was not entitled to the KSA but was entitled to the both or one date bar. Sometimes the date bars were issued of the QSA rolls and sometimes clasps only were sent off the KSA roll.

I am sure this scenario is repeated, especially across the colonial unit rolls.
