Hello, my mother told me my great grandfather Henry Waite fought in the Boer War. I cannot find any information about that. I believe he was born in 1875 and in the 1911 census was residing in Lurgan Northern Ireland. Can anyone shed any light on whether he did fight in the Boer War? I attach a picture.

and a warm welcome to the forum.
I have checked out the service records on Find my Past and there is a Henry Waite born 1875 in Bath Somerset who served with the Somerset Light Infantry.
According to his record he deserted in 1893 so did not serve in South Africa.
If you could find more information it would narrow the search.

Thank you for taking the trouble to look on Find My Past, however I don't think it's him as I'm told he was not English. I need to do more research, the trouble is in 1922 the Public Records Office in Dublin was destroyed and all the records were lost.

Hi,

The above link to this interesting article would suggest that he would have been in the Royal Irish Fusileers, however I cannot trace him and therefore think perhaps my mother was mistaken and he was not in the Boer War.
