There has been much family debate regarding my g-father's, J J Murphy from Wexford, disputed role in the Boer war, before settling in New Zealand. I have found several mentions of the name generally. How do I find the actual records of these Murphy men?

Hello juliehemming

Welcome to the forum.

With regard to your question pertaining to your G Father's role in the Boer War. It may be beneficial for you to join a website like Ancestry or Find My Past. They both hold many military documents. Also, the more details you have of your relative when searching will be helpful. There are many James J Murphys who served. Alternatively, you could post a few details on this site if you wish, i.e DOB , names of mother and father, profession, possible regiment he may have served in. The more details you can provide the more chance the forum may be able to help guide you to the relevant paperwork if available.

Best wishes

Dave.....
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,

Welcome to the Forum Julie

The only James Joseph Murphy (based on a transcript record on Find My Past) I can find who served in the South African (Boer) War of 1899-1902, served in the 2nd Imperial Light Horse, a South Africa raised unit. You can find him (regimental number 850) third from the bottom on this Medal Roll which indicates he also served as 295 (Lance Corporal??) in the 3rd Contingent of the New South Wales Imperial Bushmen.

All the other J J Murphy’s findable by a name search on this site and who served in the South African (Boer) War of 1899-1902 can be ruled out for various reasons. For example: the J J Murphy who served in the Irish Guards initially looked hopeful but further investigation shows he was called John Joseph and was born in County Mayo.

Regards, David

PS As Dave F says above more information might result in other candidates being found.
