Looking for information on my 3rd Great Grandfather Thomas Darby who served and died in the Second Boer War.
I have found out the following from ancestry but I believe there is more information about his death in the book In Memoriam by S Watt.
Served with 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment as a Private
Regiment number: 3140
Died on July 9, 1902, in Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa
Qualified for Medals and Claps for the following: Wittebergen, Cape Colony & Transvaal as of April 1, 1901.
Thomas also had an alias which was noted on the Record of Deceased Soldiers Effects (see record attached). I can make out "Nicholson" but not the word after.
Any information on Thomas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jacob

Hi Jacob,
Welcome to the forum.
To get the ball rolling, many men who attested under an alias would often use their mother's maiden name. Have you checked your family tree back to your ancestor's mother? Was she a Nicholson?
Cheers Steve

Hi Steve,
Yes but his mother's maiden name was Ree so no luck there.
Thanks, Jacob

I have taken a look at the list of casualties for the Worcestershire Regiment on the unit information section of this Website and see that he was a member of the 2nd Battalion of the regiment, and as such would very likely have been involved in the action at Slingersfontein in February 1900. Not one of the major battles of the conflict, but certainly a hot one for the men involved!
Please take a look at the Worcestershire Regiment website for a more detailed account of events at Slingersfontein. The site of the fight was thereafter known as Worcester Hill. Perhaps he was there?
The unit information page on this forum also gives an account of the arrival and movements of the 1st & 2nd Battalions during the ABW.

I can see a "G Darby" noted on the Worcestershire regiment website in the Roll of Honour - South Africa 1900 - 1902. It is also noted as "G Darby" on this forum but the regiment number matches Thomas'... Not sure if it's a Typo but also a bit odd that there's no other information.
Can you send the link for the casualty list I cannot seem to find it. Thanks

If you go to unit information on this website you should be able to select Worcestershire Regiment. A box will then offer nominal roll. Casualties for the Worcesters are listed alphabetically on this.
There is also a Roll of Honour on the Worcestershire Regiment website .

The nominal and medal rolls for the Boer War contain many typos, which all adds to the intrigue of research!
