I am helping a volunteer grave restorer, Steve Davies, who cleans military graves in the South East. We are currently researching Hubert Godwin Jones who appears on his brother’s grave stone (Richard) in Godalming, which says he was in the 6th Dragoons. He was baptised at St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Guildford on 4th August 1878. He is 12 on the 1891 census, living with his mother and two brothers in Crown Pitts, Godalming, Guildford. The father was not present. Hubert was then an errand boy.
There doesn’t seem to be a record of him joining up at National Archives, but he was killed in action 4th January 1900 at Rensburg, Colesberg as Private H. Jones, no.3775.
He is mentioned on the memorial in Colesberg British Military Cemetery, Colesberg, Pixley ka Seme District Municipality, Northern Cape, South Africa.
I'm much more familiar with WW1 research, so what other sources can I use for this man? What we would really like is a picture of him if possible.
I'd be grateful for any help.
Paul

Paul,

He is listed as deceased on the 6th Dragoons' roll (WO100/115p154). He earned the single clasp Cape Colony.

There are no papers for him as would be expected for a casualty.

You might try the local newspapers for a picture of him.

Woburn1 - do you have access to Ancestry? If so go to the Search>Public Member Tree option and enter his mother's maiden name details as follows: Jane Imms born in 1837 in Merrow, Surrey. This will give you the option of 30 Public Member Trees to examine. Click on the 30 Public Member Trees option and you will get a listing - ignore top two and go for the Barnes Family Tree. There you will see Jane & Edward James Jones had 12 children. Richard is no 6 and Hubert no 11 except they have called him Herbert because that is what the Ancestry transcriber thought it said on the 1881 census - his name is clearly Hubert on the 1891 census. Anyway ignore him and click on his father to get his profile then click on his mugshot and scroll right to a family group taken about 1880 - I reckon Hubert is sitting on his mother's lap. Not all 12 children are there but guess some had died before it was taken and one was yet to be born. The older girl Eleanor appears to have died not long after the photo was taken. I will leave you to work out which is Richard. Perhaps not exactly what you are after but you can message the creator of the tree to get permission to use the photo.
