Had my first session going through The Leigh Chronicle (near Wigan) last week, and found that at least twice in 1900 the paper published a list of Leigh men serving in, or on their way to, South Africa. Both lists - 6th April, 1900 and 31st August, 1900 - have John Lund, Lancashire Fusiliers, a 27 year-old married man, whose home address was 80 Plank Lane, Leigh, in both lists as having been killed. The only other Leigh casualty, in the August list, Thomas Rogers, 10th Hussars, who died of fever, is correct.

There was a J. Land, Coldstream Guards, who was killed in action, 1st October, 1900, but I can't find a Lund who died before the 6th of April, 1900.

I can't see a "J.Lund" of the Lancs. Fus. in Palmer. However, during a check-trawl through NFF, I did see a "3125 Cpl. J. LUNN" of that Regt, Killed on Spion Kop on 24/1/1900. I had a quick look on WO100/179 for 2nd. LF and all I could find in the "L's" was Cpl. Lunn. Will have a better look later today.
Regards
IL.

Went through WO100/179 again for 2 LF and did not find a "J.Lund". Unless his listing is buried away somewhere out of sequence, I would say that "3125 Cpl. J.Lunn" is the man.

Great stuff! Thank you all.

The General Register Office has a John Lunn, birth registered in Wigan, fourth quarter of 1871, which would have made him aged 28 at death.

Next visit I'll check the Leigh Chronicle for anything on his death.
