Another Forum member may be able to assist about family background. However, his Boer War service is quite interesting. According to medal roll WO100/142 for 69th Bty., RFA, his QSA medal bore the clasps Talana, Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Transvaal, Laings Nek and South Africa 1901. You might care to have a look at the activities of the 69th RFA under Unit Information in the Main Menu of this site. The owner of this site, Dr. Biggins, has published "Talana Account and Medal Roll" and you may wish to read there of the activities of your GF's Battery during that battle. The 69th Battery sailed for India in November 1901 so he may also have served there. The Palmer Casualty roll does not have an entry for your GF.
Good luck with your research.
Regards
IL.

lwyndhvn,

If you register for a free account on the FamilySearch site, you can search there for records. You can enter the exact name, range of birth years and country.

This gives a few potential matches eg

lwyndhvn,

Enclosed for your records, your G Grandfather's attestation and discharge papers .
Apologies if you already have them.
Thomas was born circa 1873, seaman by trade. Born in Galashiels Selkirk.
Before he sailed for Canada/ USA his discharge papers have a proposed address in Derby.
He was discharged medically unfit, that may have been due to the leg injury?
Good luck with your search.

Dave....

You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
