Hi,

I am looking for information on my great grand father 'James Knight'.

He was in South Africa Boer war, and died there I believe circa 1900,his wife Martha Dale returned to England with their children in 1901. his son Bertam Knight was born in SA in 1900.
I have a wedding certificate with a James Knight marrying a Martha Dale, as being in a corporal in the 2nd Berks in 1883, he is age 23 on the wedding certifcate so born c1860

On his daughters (My grandmother) birth certificate of 1892 he is listed as lance corporal royal berkshire regiment, residence is The barracks Reading.
I believe a corporal is higher than a lance corporal ? so unsure if the wedding certificate is his. but his daughters birth certificate is correct.

If anyone can give any pointers etc I would appreciate it - thanks

Hi DebbiHants
Welcome to the forum.
Do you have any more details regarding your G Grandfather James Knight?
I have checked the casualty list and no J Knight is recorded as dying serving with the Royal Berkshire regiment during the Anglo Boer War. Is there any more information that may help the forum ? For example, where was he born? His father or mothers name.
Any additional information would be a bonus.
I did find a Mrs Knight aged 42 who returned from South Africa with several children in 1900. There was a master B Knight with her aged 3.
Not sure if this helps, the dates are similar. However, if you do have any more clues to share? It may help with your quest.

Best regards

Dave........

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply.

Yes, Mrs Knight was his wife returning with their children, B Knight is Bertram who was born in SA and was 3mths old on the journey back.
His father was also named James Knight, his wife was Martha Dale, his mother we believe was an Annie Frampton although I cannot find a James knight born 1860 with mothers maiden name of Frampton.

All his children births except Bertram were registered in Reading

On ancestry some have him listed as a James Horace knight and one had him listed as dying from drinking poisoned water, but I have found nothing to collaborate either of those, on the marriage certificate to Martha his is listed as just James Knight age 23 ( in 1883)

Some have him listed as a sergeant major, berkshire regiment

Thanks
Debbi

Could this be your G Grandfather? Berkshire regiment is mentioned and rank of Sergeant.
Seems like he was stationed at the King Williams Town barracks.
Cause of death not poisoned water but what looks like a Carbuncle Pyamia?
