....A REPENTANT DESERTER .—At the Police Court [at Kendal], on Monday, the Rev. E. M. Reynolds had before him a young man named Daniel Harrington, who pleaded guilty to being a deserter from His Majesty's forces.—Sergeant Langhorn gave evidence that on Saturday evening the young fellow went to the Police Station, and said he wished to give himself up as a deserter from the Sixth Liverpool Regiment of Militia, having deserted in October last from Warrington. Witness had searched the files of the Police Gazette, but failed to find the prisoner gazetted. The military authorities had been communicated with, but as yet no answer had been received. The prisoner had previously told a story to the effect that he had served with the Third Battalion Munster Fusiliers in South Africa, but had been invalided home, and subsequently joined the Liverpool Militia. There was no doubt Harrington had been in South Africa. He was ordered to be kept in custody till the Petty Sessions on Wednesday.
