I came upon this piece in an Oldham paper, and his first name is reported to have been John, but I can't find a birth registration for a John H. Mallalue. Is there any record of his full name?

AN OLDHAMER IN STRATHCONA'S HORSE.
....Mr. J. S. Glover writes to us from Vancouver, B.C., under date February 12th as follows:—No doubt it will interest your readers and his relatives to know that John H. Mallalue, one of your townsmen, brother of Mr. Mallalue, schoolmaster, Scotfield Board School, and nephew of Mr. W. S. Mitton, member of the Oldham School Board, has joined Strathcona's Horse in this city. The contingent from here numbered 17; 15 was the limit, but two got special permits. They were chosen out of 75 who offered themselves. Mr. Mallalue served 5½ years in the North West Mounted Police, two of which were spent in the Yukon Contingent.
The Oldham Standard, Wednesday 28th February 1900

The only J. H. Mallalue birth registrations that I can find in England and Wales during the late 1800s were James Herbert Mallalue, born Oldham, 1861, died 1866, and James Herbert Mallalue, born Oldham, 1870 - probably brothers as Greaves was the maiden name of the mother of both.

Pretty sure it's James, Berenice.
James Hamilton Mallalue. Private 408 Strahcona's Horse.

Medal roll remarks have 2 additional addresses for him.
Lee's Road Oldham Lancashire
And 57 King Street Egremont Cheshire. 1905.
Also mentions 32nd Battalion IY as acting Sergeant.

Hello Berenice
Just to add to the confusion, although I think it's our man, or maybe his brother?
A, J H Mallalue served in WW1 Military Mounted Police.
Name stated James Herbert Mallalue. Married to Alice Mary Mallalue.
This is what makes me think it's our man........His address in 1915
Strathcona
Cliff Place
Bispham
Blackpool
Lancashire.
Also his clasp entitlement mentioned matches his S A service.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

So his IY attestation, early 1902, he gave his age as 36, yet his age in when I assume was circa 1900 was 28. I've looked again, can't find his birth registration in England and Wales, have also checked Scotland. Neither can I find his brother, Hiram. Harry, yes, Hiram, no. I wonder if he was born James Herbert Mallalue, and later changed Herbert to Hamilton?

Can't find any mentions of him online; I found the piece I transcribed while viewing the microfilmed local newspapers in Oldham Library.

* edit - Hiram Mallalue's grave is in Greenacre Cemetery, Oldham. His brother, J. H., isn't mentioned on the headstone as also being in the same grave.
