AFTER WAR : DESERTION
.
....At Gainsborough this morning, Charles Marling and Edward Mortimer, two privates, of the 11th Hussars, who wore South African war medal ribbons, were charged with deserting their regiment.
....A constable stated that the previous day he saw the soldiers in plain clothing. He questioned and charged them with desertion. They admitted that they were deserters, and said they had been absent from the regiment 15 days. One of them said to the other, "I told you we should not reign in Gainsborough ten minutes." It also transpired that they had purchased civilian clothing at Gainsborough.
....The Superintendent said he was in communication with the commanding officer of the regiment.
....The prisoners were sent to Lincoln to await an escort.
Hull Daily Mail, Tuesday 19th August 1902

Did they forfeit their medals as a result of deserting after the end of the war?

Hi Berenice

I am having a few problems tracking down Mr Marling and Mr Mortimer.
Cannot seem to find any connection to the 11th Hussars. Do we have any more clues?

Best wishes
Dave

I thought that Charles Marling might be a fairly easy name to search for, but there was also a British diplomat of the same name who showed up in all the searches.

Is it possible that they appeared in court under assumed names?

I think the assumed names is very possible.
I did find a Lieutenant Colonel Marling in the 18th Hussars. Alas, nothing for our 2 deserters.
