Hi all,

Was just hoping to pick brains a little, am researching a relative who served in the 12th (South Notts) Squadron Imperial Yeomanry and wondered if anyone had some tips on where to get info.

I have found the chaps service record No20299 William Belfield Shorthose and also his name on the medal rolls.
He was in the 1st VB Sherwood Foresters before joining the Yeomanry, he sailed in February 1901 returning in June 1902 and was back with the Foresters in 1904.

Any tips very much appreciated - always learning.

Many thanks in advance
James

If you live anywhere near, try Ilkeston Public Library and see if they have back copies of the local paper for the period.

ILKESTON MEN FOR ACTIVE SERVICE.
....Five young men leave Ilkeston to-day for Aldershot, having volunteered for the Imperial Yeomanry, for service in South Africa. Their names are William Shorthose, Pilkington (2), H. Sheffield Daily Telegraph, Monday, 28th January 1901

6420 Private W. B. Shorthose, of M Company, 1st Volunteer Battalion, the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) was promoted to Lance Corporal, in the Battalion Orders, Saturday 19th March 1904.
Derby Daily Telegraph, Monday, 21st March 1904

The Derby Daily Telegraph, Monday 5th September 1904, reported that W. B. Shorthose was a member of the Ilkeston Volunteer and Civilian Rifle Club.

You have set yourself a task, there! When I have had reason to try and follow the movements of an IY squadron, my only real recourse was to consult my copy of the SAFF casualty roll for the period in question. As the 12th sqn was with the 3rd Bn., IY, I would check from end Feb, 1901 to the cessation of hostilities - looking for casualties other than those caused by Disease. Even then, as the 3rd Bn., IY was made up of several squadrons, so you would have to isolate those men from the 12th squadron. A lot of work should you follow that path.
The route suggested by Berenice can be very useful if the papers are available. As a matter of interest, none of the names mentioned by Berenice feature in the Palmer casualty roll.
Good luck with your quest.
Regards
IL.

James,

There is a bibliography of IY sources here: www.angloboerwar.com/forum/11-research/3...ial-yeomanry-sources

In addition, the same book (A bibliography of Regimental Histories of the British Army by A S White) lists these Auxiliary Forces publications for Nottinghamshire which may help:

History of the South Notts Yeomanry Cavalry, 1794 to 1894. By George Fellows, Capt. and Hon. Major. Nottingham: Thomas Forman & Sons, 1895. 166 pp., portraits, plates.

Historical Record of the South Nottinghamshire Hussars Yeomanry, 1794 to 1924. By the late George Fellows, Major and the late Benson Freeman, Eng.-Commdr., R.N. With a Foreword by Col. Sir Lancelot Rolleston. Aldershot: Gale & Polden Ltd., 1928. xxii, 352 pp., portraits, plates, maps. 5 coloured plates of uniform and 1 of standard.

307 (South Notts. Hussars Yeo.) Field Regt., R.A., T.A. A Brief History of the Regiment, 1794-1950. By “Hussar.” [Nottingham: printed by Nottingham Paper Bag Co. Ltd., 1950]. 16 pp.

History of the 3rd Regiment Imperial Yeomanry, 28-1-00 to 6-8-02. By Lieut.-Col. R. L. Birkin. Nottingham: J. & J. Vice, printer, 1905. viii, 143, [76] pp., illustrations, map. 13" x 8". Nottingham Contingent from the Sherwood Rangers and the South Notts. Hussars.

Lt.Col. Birkin’s History of the 3rd is an essential one and has nominal rolls for all companies.
There's an excellent map showing some of the movements of the 3rd in the front. It's a rather rare book to find and is very desirable due to the nominal rolls.

3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry
South African Field Force entries for the battalion from 1st of January 1901 to the end of the conflict.
Having had a look at Corporal Shorthose’s medal roll, his fellow soldiers have a 5-digit regimental numbers. I have only marked names which were severely wounded or killed. This may give you a helping hand as to where the battalion saw action. It is a long shot that the numbers marked were in the 12th company South Nottinghamshire’s but hopefully it may help to ascertain where the 3rd Battalion and companies were located for further research.

You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave
