Some of the dates given in the report of his death are wrong - enlisted July 1898, went to the front in October that year, and entered Pretoria in June 1899. However, the date of his death is correct, and he was probably buried at Brithdir Cemetery/Gwaelod y Brithdir, in Hengoed, Glamorgan. Any further information on him would be much appreciated, thank you.

BROUGHT HOME TO DIE.

SOUTH AFRICAN HERO EXPIRES AT NEW TREDEGAR.

SYMPATHETIC ACTION OF LORD TREDEGAR.

....The death of Private Henry Davies, of the Coldstream Guards, took place at the residence of his uncle, Mr. Henry Davies, house agent, New Tredegar, on Thursday morning. Private Davies enlisted in the Guards in July, 1898, and in October of the same year he departed for the front [sic]. He served under Lord Methuen and Lord Roberts, and when entering Pretoria, in June, 1899 [sic], he was shot in the back, the wound injuring his spine and causing paralysis. He remained for a period in the hospitals at Pretoria. Deelfontein, and Wynburg. and was brought home to Devonport in October, 1900, and detained there until removed to the Newport Hospital on January 31. On Wednesday last he was removed to his home in a, saloon coach provided by the Great Western Railway Company at the instance of Lord Tredegar, who has taken a deep interest in the case, sending a nurse to attend to his wants. The case was hopelessly incurable from the outset.

I could not find a "Pte H. Davies of CG" in Palmer and casting the net wider I did see one "1781 Pte. H. Davis, 2CGds" as wounded, Pretoria, 4/6/00. SAFF agrees with the spelling and there is no later correction. Sounds like a Match. Looking at WO100/164 (CGds) page 44 I see he is recorded there as "H .Davis" and qualified for QSA clasps Belmont, Modder River, Driefontein and Johannesburg. There is no marginal note on the medal roll.
Regards
IL.

Thanks, guys. The General Register Office has the death of Henry Davies registered in the Bedwellty registration district (which would include New Tredegar)in the second quarter of 1902, aged 23.
