George Cheeseman died at Chelmsford Hospital on the 31st of July 1929, aged 45, due to septicæmia following an accident at work.

He was reported to have joined the Imperial Yeomanry aged 16, having given his age as 18, and was awarded a medal with five clasps. After the war he returned home and joined the Royal Field Artillery, completing eight years' service, and leaving with the rank of sergeant. On the outbreak of the Great War he rejoined, and after a spell of training troops at Hurstley Park, he went out to France near the end of 1914, as a sergeant-major with the RFA. While attached to the French troops, he was awarded the French Medaille Militaire for bravery in helping to save a battery of guns, and he left the Army on 12th November 1918, suffering from rheumatism.

He was interred at St Andrew's Churchyard Extension, Boreham, Essex.

George served in the103rd 2nd battalion Warwickshire Imperial Yeomanry
Reg number 21005 - QSA 5 clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal plus the 1901-1902 date clasps. The 2 medal rolls are attributed to the 103rd and the 49th company Imperial Yeomanry.
His Artillery number was 322247 . He was indeed a Sergeant in the 33rd Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Attached to the 8th Division 1914 -18. Looking at his index card he was entitled to the WW1 trio.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Good stuff, Dave, thanks.

I'm going through obituaries in old newspapers and sometimes find photos, so I'm posting them before I forget about them!

Berenice,

Your work is creating an amazing resource of the men and women who served in the Boer War, drawing together strands of research that would otherwise go unnoticed.
