I've come across this notice in the Western Daily Press, Tuesday 16th June 1931, and wondered if anyone knows anything about him.

...."Members of the Bristol branch South African War Veterans' Association are asked to meet at 9, Cowley Street, Newfoundland Road, to-morrow at 2.15 p.m. to pay last respects to Comrade J. Jolliffe."

Checking death registrations, I find that he was Japhet Jolliffe, who died aged 72; he was born in Bristol in 1859. A bit old at 40-43 to have taken part in the ABW?

Hi Berenice
There was a Japhet Jolliffe who served in South Africa in 1879. I found some papers ref 1900 and he was in the 2nd Royal Somerset reserve regiment Reg number 2548. Enlisted in May 1900 Bristol aged 40. Born in St Philips Gloucestershire 1859/60

Thanks very much, Dave. I couldn't find anything else about his death or the funeral, so I've no idea where he was buried, other than it was in Bristol.

I think I've found him in SA. He served in 1st battalion 13th Regiment of foot, 1st Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert) Army number 361532. He was awarded the South Africa medal 1877-79. However, he didn't receive a date clasp. So probably no combat ,he was serving on the Natal side of the Tugela probably between January 11th until 1st September 1879, hence no clasp.
