SmallTownGirl,

Welcome to the forum.

I looked for service papers for him but could not find any, sadly. These would have provided his forename.

He was in the 3rd Leicesters. He is listed on two medals rolls for the Boer War, both times with his initial only.

Can the Census records help perhaps?

There are a few potential matches in Ancestry for those born 1872 +/- 10 years called A Bull,

540 matches with not very many men with a forename beginning A.

Some possible matches from the first 3 of 11 pages:

Amos A Bull
Birth abt 1875
Death 04/1956 (Apr 1956) Loughborough Leicestershire England

This man would be about the right age and geographically may have chosen the Leicester Regiment to join.

Equally, it could be this man:

Alfred A Bull
Birth abt 1875
Death 01/1942 (Jan 1942) Hendon Middlesex England

or

Arthur A Bull
Birth abt 1874
Death 01/1948 (Jan 1948) Brighton Sussex England

There is an Alfred Bull who died in the Great War

ALFRED BULL
Service Number: 10067
6th Bn., Leicestershire Regiment who died on 01 October 1917 Age 30
Son of George and Mary Bull. Born at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.

But he would have been too young for the Boer War.

Thanks. I appreciate that there are a lot of potential candidates for this "A Bull", but I was hoping someone would know of some official (and available!) paperwork that might mention his given name. It seems, however, that I'm not destined to be lucky with this chap.
