885 Private John Buist Johnston. "D" Squadron, 4th South African Horse. Killed in action on 8th September 1916, aged 39. Son of Patrick Leslie Johnston, and Jessie Chalmers Johnston, of Huntly, Longforgan, Perthshire, Scotland.

LONGFORGAN TROOPER KILLED.
...."News was received from the War Office yesterday of the death of Trooper John B. Johnston, who was killed in action on 8th inst. The second son of Mr. Pat L. Johnston, Templehall House, Longforgan, he was educated at Dundee High School and Harris Academy, and adopted the sea as a profession. When the South African war broke out he left his ship at Durban, and joined Brabant's Horse, where he was promoted corporal, and was engaged largely in scouting. He transferred to the Western Province Mounted Rifles, and was there promoted sergeant. When the latter regiment was disbanded he joined the Cape Mounted Police, and remained with them for some time. For these services he held the Queen's Medal with three clasps and King's Medal with two clasps.
....Latterly he was engaged in business in Basutoland for a number of years, and when the present war broke out he offered for service. Simultaneously with the arrival of the official intimation of his death Mr. Johnston received a cheery letter from his son."
Dundee Courier, Thursday 21st September 1916

He was interred at Morogoro Cemetery, Tanganyika (now Tanzania), and is named on the Longforgan and Invergowrie war memorial.
