I was recently sent a photo of George's headstone (by Andy Miles - my thanks to him), which is in Spital Cemetery, Chesterfield, and that led to my purchase of a 2012 publication 'A Gentleman In Khaki Ordered South - The Boer War Diary of Corporal George Stokes' by Stephen Huggins.

George enlisted at Northampton, in 1895, aged 16, under the name of George Bramley - he departed England for South Africa on 21st October 1899, and didn't return until 2nd June 1903. He later served in the Sherwood Foresters during WW1, with the rank of sergeant. During his time in South Africa he had to face a Regimental Court Martial, being reduced to the ranks.

The book is available to buy on Amazon.
