DUNBAR MAN KILLED AT KIMBERLEY.

We give a portrait of Trooper Thomas John Goodall, of the Kimberley Light Horse, reported killed at Kimberley on 16th inst. Deceased was 31 years of age, was the second son of Mr. A. Goodall, Dunbar. He was home from the Rand on a holiday a short time ago; in fact, he only left Dunbar on 23d September, landed at Cape Town on 10th October, and, finding that war had been declared, made his way to Kimberley to assist in the defence of that place. The deceased has had an eventful career. At the age of 19 he went out to South America, where he was employed in the erection of houses for the emigrants who were flocking to Buenos Ayres at that time. He was a joiner by trade, but, unlike many emigrants, he never forgot his old folks at home, and on one occasion at least he travelled 20 miles to write a letter. After a stay of four years he returned home, but shortly after, at the solicitation of a brother who had gone to South Africa for his health, deceased went out to Kimberley, where he remained till the capture of Bulawayo. He then made for that place, but as the waggons with which he was travelling were too slow, he left them 350 miles from Bulawayo, and tramped alone that distance, carrying sufficient quantity of provisions and water for 100 miles and odd at a stretch. He left the Robinson Rand last July with a return ticket, but the day he landed on his return, as already stated, war had been declared. Deceased's father only learned his death from yesterday's "Evening News," and has yet received no further particulars.
