At Swansea Police Court.

"The Girl He Left Behind Him."

James McCarthy, labourer, 17, Brook-street, was summoned by Susan Williams, to show cause, etc. - Mr. Henry Thompson appeared for plaintiff and Mr. Leeder defended.

Mr. Thompson explained that the girl worked at the Hafod Tinplate Works. Defendant had recently been serving with the Welsh Regiment at South Africa. The pair had known each other for five years - three years prior to the birth of the child they had kept company regularly. The child - a girl - was born on August 13th, 1900, while complainant was in the Workhouse. At that time defendant was serving in South Africa.

Several witnesses were called.

Defendant admitted having been intimate with the girl, but not at the period necessary to substantiate complainant's case. He denied having sent a letter containing endearing terms to her from Prieska.

At this stage, Mr. Leeder said he would not proceed further with the case.

The usual order of 3s. 6d. per week for 14 years, and expenses was made.

The Cambrian, Friday 25th April 1902
