Hi Folks,

I'm a complete newbie here so I beg your indulgence. Going through some old family photos I stumbled across this one dating from WW1 but I believe the soldier is wearing a Queen's South Africa Medal. The photo was taken in St.Helens, Lancashire, and he's possibly a Lancs Fusilier. Sadly, I don't know who he is.

Are there any resources out there that might help me narrow down the options to help identify him? I'm guessing he's either a relative or perhaps a neighbor. I'd love to identify him although I realize it's a very, VERY long shot.

Any and all suggestions would be most welcome.

Many thanks,
Mark

Hello Mark

If you have a list of possible names then look at FindmyPast as they have the best range of service papers on the internet.

Good luck

Hi Meurig,

Yeah...tried that with no success. I simply can't align any of my family names with the person in the photo, hence my confusion over why my family kept it. Sadly, there's nobody around who can answer the question.

Kind regards,
Mark

Agreed. He's one of 4 military photos of people I can't recognize or identify. Clearly I'll have to do some more lateral thinking to try other options/methods of identification.

Ok...I did some digging in the 1918 Absent Voters List which fortunately survives for my home town. I found 2 possible candidates:

949 Pte Thomas Jackson, Northumberland Fusiliers

5443 Pte Henry Matthews, Lancashire Fusiliers

Jackson lived on South John Street, about 10 doors down from my relatives, while Matthews lived around the corner on Traverse Street. I like these 2 candidates because of their low service numbers which perhaps indicate pre-war military service.

Can anyone help determine whether either of them served during the Boer War?

Many thanks,
Mark
