I'm doing my family tree and I've just found out my great grandad served in the second Boer war in the imperial yeomanry. I've got his rank and number etc. But on the form it says" did not serve in south Africa". He was only 17 so would that have been the reason or did he serve somewhere else? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

From which source did you get that information Taurus_1975? The official medal roll shows, as you originally stated, that he didn't serve in South Africa and had no QSA entitlement. Did he qualify for a QSA through service in South Africa with a unit other then the Imperial Yeomanry?

My quite useful CD roll of Imperial Yeomanry names shows "36834 Murphy William Charles" with the notation "Trooper, Imperial Yeomanry". The overwhelming number of names on this roll have a unit notation. This one does not. Have you searched through the supplementary IY rolls to look for a late claim?
