My Grandfather
Stanlry Charles Rankin served in the boer war his medals have his services no 616 Kitchener Fighting scouts with 3 bars transvaal, Orangefreestate and cape colony he was born in 1884 in New zealand but lived in Australia.I don't know how he got to SA what he did or how he got back and information would be good.

I see he was a one time member of the Canadian Scouts too, as well as the 1st Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, he is on the formers roll in WO100/287 with annotation "undesirable" there would certainly have been a story there, my first thoughts would be a careful look through both WO126/16-17 and WO126/76-82 at Kew, in the hope his papers will have survived.

Thanks a lot this helps but I'm in Australia not sure when I can get to the UK . My Grandfather was only 16 when enlisted soI don't no if that any thing to do with undesirable quote.

In addition to the 3 clasps you mention, he also earned the South Africa 1901 clasp for his service with the Canadian Scouts.

This is listed on the medal roll WO100/360p354

It appears to have been issued 10 May 1905 and, being sent separately from his medal, is probably the reason the two are no longer together.
