I am looking for information about my great uncle Private William Daff No,1378 who died in South Africa on 26th June 1900.aged 37, whilst serving with Yorks Regiment during the South Africa campaign. I have his service record from Ancestry.co.uk which is quite damaged. I am trying to find if he was buried in South Africa or if his body was shipped back to the UK. I cannot find a death record for him in Ancestry. I would also like to know if he was awarded any campaign medals. Is there any one that can point me in the right direction that will help me to find out this information.

Many Thanks

The book 'In Memoriam' by Steve Watt has the following entry:

1378 Private W Daff, 2nd East Yorkshire Regiment. Died of Disease at Deelfontein on 24-06-1900. Interred at Deelfontein 2.

I hope this helps.

If you google 'South African Military History Society - Journal - Deelfontein' you will find a useful article entitled:

Deelfontein (A hospital during the Anglo-Boer War, a cemetery today)

The article was written by S A (Steve) Watt and, if you have access to that Journal, it was published in Volume 7, Number 4 (December 1987).

Hi Geoff,

1378 Pte. W Daff of the 2nd East Yorkshires is listed in the Queen's South Africa (QSA) roll (WO 100/176). The roll dated 5th Sept 1901, Bethlehem lists a QSA with clasps for the Cape Colony and Orange Free State for him. There is a note 'deceased' in the right margin. I hope this helps with his campaign medal. You'll be able to find the page on Ancestry if you look under Awards in the military section and you search "South Africa 1900."

Cheers,

Mark
