Hi David,
perhaps it was the Paardekraal monument that inspired the building of the Voortrekker monument which was inaugerated in 1949.
I've inserted a link as it is quite an interesting structure.

It doesn't show that clearly but the perimeter wall represents a laager as at the battle of blood river.
They also have a service on 16th December to celebrate the vow taken on that day.
