This photograph shows Sir George White being presented with an address by the Mayor of Ladysmith, under the portico of Ladysmith Town Hall. The presentation was made on 3 March 1900.

Churchill was in Ladysmith that day, so, is he in the crowd?

Yes, there his is, next to the left-hand portico pillar (behind General Hunter), wearing his trademark black bow tie, and about to doff his South African Light Horse slouch hat with its distinctive black Sakabula feathers.

I thought he always made sure he was to the forefront when the cameras were in action.

Neville, I would have found Churchill on the very first photo simply because the event clearly took place after breakfast. The timing implies that Churchill would have been on at least his second bottle of Champagne and consequently would have been looking for support in the form of an overweight woman or, as the case may be, a Doric column. The man seemingly missing from the picture is the one who made it all possible: Sir Redvers Buller. I have a sneaky feeling he was hiding at the post office….
