From the next Morton and Eden sale:

QSA (3) Cape Colony, Transvaal, Wittebergen (12081 Pte. H. Gunton, R.A.M.C.);
KSA (2) (12081 Pte H. Gunton. R.A.M.C.);

Private Henry Gunton, of Whitechapel, London, was slightly wounded during the action at Moedwil on 30 September 1901. He was one of just 4 RAMC. personnel wounded. Serving throughout the Great War from 1914 onwards, his two MICs appear to state the he forfeited his Great War entitlement, for reasons as yet unknown, despite reaching the rank of Acting Staff-Sergeant for a time. He was demobilised on 20 February 1919.

Private William Bees, VC

William Dolman Bees VC (12 September 1871 to 20 June 1938) was born in Midsomer Norton, Somerset. He joined the 1st Derbyshire Regiment 7 March 1890 aged 18. He served in the Tirah Campaign, 1897-8.

VC citation, LG 17 December 1901:

Private Bees was one of the Maxim-gun detachment, which at Moedwil, on the 30th September, 1901, had six men hit out of nine. Hearing his wounded comrades asking for water, he went forward, under a heavy fire, to a spruit held by Boers about 500 yards ahead of the gun, and brought back a kettle full of water. In going and returning he had to pass within 100 yards of some rocks also held by Boers, and the kettle which he was carrying was hit by several bullets.

He was promoted to Corporal for his action at Moedwil.

The VC was presented by Lord Kitchener 30 July 1902.

Bees was discharged 18 September 1902.

During the Great War, he served in various posts in the UK and was affected by ill health.

His VC is on display at the Sherwood Foresters Museum, Nottingham Castle.

Just to clarify the QSA to Gnr W Homer 28th RFA was sold for £525, for some strange reason our website converted the price in to dollars, but showed it with a £ symbol. Hence the strange, and very high figure.
