A picture of Middelburg in 1901.

Middelburg provided a commando for the Boer forces but it had to be abandoned on 25 Jul 1900 on the approach of General French.

On 28 Feb 1901 Lord Kitchener met Botha in Middelburg to discuss peace terms.

Middelburg was an important supply base for the British columns as it has access to the railway line.

Concentration camps for Boers and blacks were based in the town the graves can still be visited today.
