Hi everybody
Over the years I have been fortunate in acquiring a number of "Out of the Ordinary" ABO medals and even one DTD/ABO pair to a "Foreigner". I would like to share them with you and hope to see contributions from other collections as well.
I will start the ball rolling with the ABO to "Kruger's Jew"
Johannes Stephanus Jacob Arnhold's story is told in detail by Chief Rabbi Professor L Rabinowitz who interviewed him in 1948. An additional snippet of information also comes from Arnhold's Vorm "B" where he states that he was the founder of Ben Viljoen's Volunteer Corps in Krugersdorp.
I did not re-ribbon the ABO because I was fascinated by the minute stitching at the suspender pin.
I suspect that it was lovingly done by a "Tannie", wife of one of his Afrikaner friends in the Pretoria suburb of Wonderboom South.
In the 1940's I was a schoolboy living in Capital Park, probably less than 5 km from where Jacob resided. I wish I had known about him at the time! I remember seeing Boer War veterans wearing medals at the annual Day of the Vow celebrations at the massive "Wonderboom" tree site and it is even possible that we attended some of these events together!!
