Mike,

A lovely trio of medals. He was wounded in the famous sortie of 28 Nov 99 which makes it a very nice group of medals.

Best wishes
David

If you don't already have them, his service papers are in WO97.

He was born 1874 in Swinton, Lancashire.

Very nice group indeed!

Hello Mike,
I take it that his pair are not actually named "Tyldesllly" I think it is a super pair of medals and you are quite lucky to find them, a local lad for Manchester too!
He joined the Militia on the 10th of July 1893, the 3rd Loyal's, actually in Manchester, before joining the army on the 17th of October.
You only very rarely find pairs to this regiment with stars that are original to the them, most have just been added at a later date and I am quite sure that many members of this regiment went to their graves, not having claimed it, nor could it be worn whilst in uniform when still serving.
That said, an "A" hallmarked star in this case might just be quite original and have actually been owned by Thomas himself, as I note , with considerable interest that his transfer to the reserve took place in South Africa, moreover, his actual service in the same, was actually in the South African Reserve from the 11th of July 1902 to the 16th of October 1905.
Regards Frank

Frank,

Why would he have joined the South African reserves? Would it have been an option if his time expired whilst in SA?

With thanks
David

Hello David,
Yes, if you were time expired with "the flag" and wished to remain in the country, it was available to those who saw any potential opportunity out there.
Kind regards Frank
