Good heavens David,
Clearly, they really wanted that plum pudding! :(

Frank,

Scaling the side of the hill sounded quite a feat from all accounts. The beer and pudding must have made for a strange end to their day.

Typical De Wet really, the kind of slippery man that he was! :(

Hi

I took some photos at Krismiskop a few days ago.

The first one is a general view of the hill as one approaches it from the Bethlehem-Kestell main road.

The second is a down-hill view of the relatively gentle slope on which the troops pitched their tents.

The third shows the much steeper and rockier slope up which De Wet's men approached the sleeping Tommies. Quite rocky but not as dramatic as some of the artists depicted it!!

The ILN sketch of 1 Feb 1902 is in error : 95% of the fighting took place on the plateau and not on the rocky slope.

Great photos, Henk. Many thanks.

It is very interesting to see the side of the kop and to realise that it was in reality quite steep.

Best wishes
David
