Good morning Brett,
All too true I'm afraid, sadly, many members of the IY were just not up to it, a complete lack of training, moreover, it was often the case that whole units were simply not fit for purpose, I have never thought much of them.
Having said that, some of the Sharpshooters and Lovat's Scouts, in particular, were very exceptional soldiers!
Kind regards Frank

Thank you very much to those who have contributed so handsomely to my knowledge of the battle and the man.

Alphonso has proved quite a tough nut to crack with Ancestry having him as Alphonso Stott, Alphonso Scott, Alfonso Scott and Alfonso Stott..... B)

I can picture the scene as the census enumerator went house to house - er... did you say Scott or Stott Mr Stott or is that Scott?....... :)

All told a jolly nice medal and a very pleasant vendor from whom it was procured - he even phoned me in South Africa to ask how I would like it posted!

Regards

Rory

Hi Rory and the rest

De Wet's brilliantly executed attack on Tweefontein/Groenkop/Krismiskop has fascinated me since I first visited the site in the mid-1980's in the company of Justin Davies and his father Trevor Davies.

We were on a loosely planned "Battlefield Tour" and after seeing the signboard, we turned off the main tarred road, asked permission and directions at the farmhouse and drove up the relatively easy NE slope of Groenkop to the monument at the top.

Since then I have visited the site with a number of “medallic” visitors. It is now well sign-posted with key-positions signposted. I have also added medals to a number of participants to my main Boer War collection.

The KSA above is to Holmes Rl Dubl Fus and not to Mitchell RFA : heading on the latter recipient's main QSA roll page "1 Pr Maxims RA (Pom Poms)"
