1298 Trooper C.L.Dalwood Johannesburg Mounted Rifles
QSA with clasps OFS & Transvaal the SA1901 is confirmed but loose on the medal.
Trooper Dalwood was killed in action at Riefontein on 14th July 1901 as listed in the SAFF casualty roll.
If any member can add any information about the man or the action I would be most grateful.

Paul,

A nice acquisition.

I can't find mention of him or the engagement in the papers but will keep looking.

Stirling omits to mention any engagement on 14 Jul 01 for the JMR perhaps because the regiment 'only' lost two men KIA that month.

In July 1901 the two battalions were put together, and under Colonel Stewart operated as a column, which did much trekking and skirmishing generally in the east of the Transvaal and about the Zululand border.

David,

Thank you for taking the time to look for me, I was just about to look through Stirling's myself.
"Perhaps because the regiment 'only' lost two men KIA that month."
Yes I suppose that seems possible.

Cheers

Hi

The incident is briefly mentioned in "Two Years at the Front" by Lt B Moeller p225.

" ....We then moved on north-north-east. The rear-guard were closely followed by 50 or 60 Boers, resulting in one Johannesburg Mounted Rifle being killed and one 13th Mounted Infantry severely wounded...."
