Hello Paul,
I would have a careful look in WO126/67-73, Clarence Dalwood's original paper may well have survived.

Paul,

I wonder if this is your man. This Clarence Dalwood would have been 18 when gold was discovered on the Rand in 1886. Perhaps he made his way to Johannesburg to make his fortune? Could be a good story here.

According to Steve Watt he seems to be buried at Standerton though I have to confess I find Watt's book difficult to decipher. Henk may be better at this than me!

The cutting is taken from 'The Bristol Mercury and Daily Post' 20th October 1883.

All best wishes,

Justin

Justin,

I was confused why he was interred in Standerton. Perhaps he was moved there. There are a couple of places called Rietfontein so I am not quire sure where the action too place either.

Kind regards
David

Here is the entry in Moeller's diary that Henk identified. It gives the context for the engagement.

Hi Justin,

Many thanks for taking the time.
I wonder if that is Clarence?
A 10s fine seems severe,I wonder what kind of sweets they were
As you say could be a good story.

Paul :)
