Hello Paul,
I like Kitchener's Fighting Scouts, they were actually raised on the 23rd of November 1900 in Pretoria, both regiments, all ten squadrons were quickly recruited and put onto the veldt as an anti commando unit.
Now then Paul, the one to have is a medal to a man in the 1st Regiment who actually was not discharged until disbandment in 1902, the Northern Transvaal was a very dangerous place and remained so well after the war had ended, everyone on all four sides was armed to the teeth including both sets of local natives, the friendly ones and the not so friendly ones! :(
I really don't think that many people actually know what was going on in the Northern Transvaal, if they did, these medals would be worth rather more.
Again, be careful, don't pay too much!
Kind regards Frank

Morning Frank,

Thank you for the extra information on the KFS
The last two medals purchased have been to Scouts, none then two together ;)

I think that there are a number of ways to go with SAMIF, some people would only want members of the KFS if they had served in other units prior to joining because of the clasps on a given medal, others collect casualties for a particular engagement regardless of clasps, yet others just want the unit name in their collection.
The way I collected was to buy a man who was a founder member of the unit in question, for example, lets take Roberts Horse, they were raised at the begining of 1900, part of General French's Cavalry Division, so instead for buying a man with a couple of State clasps who joined later, you could buy a man who rode with French to Kimberley and went on to Paardeberg, thats how I used to do it anyway Paul, but, your collection, your choice, the best reason to buy anything is because you like it! :)
