Hi guys, I think this is pretty much my first real post and it's one looking for help. I just picked up a single bar SA 1902 QSA to Lieut. ASHLEY COOPER 6th Bn. Can. Mtd. Rif. The only info I can find is that he applied for a Canadian land grant after the war.

As I'm a bit of a noob on Boer War medals, is there anything else anyone can tell me about this man and medal?

Regards,

Greg

Hi Greg....

Is there any way that you can post a photo of the naming?????

I have looked on my lists and am unable to find an Ashley Cooper on any of the medal lists.....

As far as I can find no member of the 6th Bn. Canadian Mounted Rifles rec'd a medal for service in South Africa as the war ended before they arrived in South Africa..... That is as a member of the 6th but may have gotten a medal from another unit......

Mike

From CWM Website:

In April 1902, the British requested from Canada a fourth contingent of 2,000 men recruited and funded on the same basis as the 2nd Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles. The contingent was recruited in April 1902 and organized into four regiments of Canadian Mounted Rifles. Each regiment had 26 officers, 483 men and 539 horses, organized into a headquarters and four squadrons. The contingent therefore could field 16 squadrons, three more than the combined strengths of the second and third contingents, plus Strathcona's Horse.

Each regiment was commanded by a veteran of previous service in South Africa, and included a large number of veterans in both its commissioned and non-commissioned ranks. These units arrived in South Africa after the war had ended, however, and returned to Canada in July 1902 at which time they disbanded.

Hi Mike, thanks for taking a look. I initially just Googled his name and came up with a nominal roll from the Canadian Almanac, 1903. He is on the list for the Sixth Regiment in the Sixth Contingent as the "Res. Officer" which I assume is the Reserve Officer.
The web address for this source is: uccr.tripod.com/mckenzie/mckenzie-boerwar.html

I'll take a image of the naming and post it later today.

Thanks again,

Greg

GregN,

I had a look on the rolls and cannot see any obvious matches in either the Canadian units or the SAC.

I will be interesting to see the naming.

Kind regards
David
