After some illustration of QSA naming styles in another thread, I would like to illustrate x2 ways of expressing the poor apostrophe on QSA's to the Lovat Scouts. The first shows what could well be an inverted comma and the second illustrates the use of a simple dot for possessive case.
The first medal is named to "8872 Pte. G.A.Ross" (bars CC and Witte) and the second is named to "8782 Corpl. J.Morrison" with same clasps. Both reflect a lot of hard work leading up to the surrender of Prinsloo.
It may also be interesting to consider that the KSA named to Corpl. Morrison has the apostrophe for the unit name as an inverted comma.
Does all of this simply mean that the machine operator naming the medals was under a lot of pressure and just made mistakes?
Regards to all
IL.

Nice medals IL. It would be nice to know the reason for these differences. Give the low frequency, I would go with errors on the part of the compositors.

Best wishes

Yes, doubtless a reflection of work pressures. The variation in the naming is - of course - not really of great importance. The only reason it came to mind was my seeing the Strathcona QSA naming on another thread.

Hello Ian,
Lovat Scouts, indeed Lovats or Lovat's Scouts, all three are correct, have been the only Imperial Yeomanry in my own collection for many years now as I felt they were the best and most unusual of the IY that went out to South Africa.
I have only officers in my collection and they are normally engraved, these too, were finished both with and without the apostrophe.
Kind regards Frank
