Any NGR fundi's out there?

I've acquired a no clasp QSA to Mr. J. Whitehead of the NGR.

The only roll I could find has his name misspelt until you get to the roll itself where he appears as an Inspector who was in Ladysmith through the Siege.

I toddled off to the Archives and drew the Death Notice iro the only J Whitehead who was with the NGR that I could find and, when he passed away in 1906, he was still a Guard??

What is the rank of Inspector and would such have reverted to the rank of Guard after the war?

Any ino on who I think is John Whitehead would be appreciated.
