Hi Guys

I would like some help and info on this group. KSA is renamed with SA01/SA02 bars, and QSA has SA01/SA02 bars. Did he qualify for the KSA?
Second question is around the bars pinned on the Victory medal. Is that legit.

Khedives Sudan Medal Bars Khartoun/The Atbara 4468 Corpl J McDonald 1st Seaforth Highrs
Queen Sudan Medal 4468 Cpl J McDonald 1/ Sea Hrs
QSA Bars CC/SA01/SA02 4468 Corp J McDonald 2 Sea Highrs
KSA Bars SA01/SA02 4468 Sergt J McDonald 2nd Seaf:Highrs
Victory Medal Bars Sudwest-Afrika-1901/Gross Nabas/Kalahari 1908/Nossob 154 Pte J.M.T McDonald E.Afr Road C
War Medal 154 Pte J.M.T McDonald E.Afr Road C

Any help would be appreciated

Regards
Anthony Govender

Anthony,

Looking at the medal rolls, Sgt John McDonld's supplementary roll (WO100/203p138) says he was issued with the SA01 and SA02 clasps and that no KSA was issued. A further note says he was discharged to the Army Reserve in South Africa 27 Oct 1902.

His QSA roll entry (WO100/203p60) to Cpl says he was awarded the CC clasp and that he was invalided home 6 Jun 1900.

He must have returned to South Africa after his recuperation but not gained the time required for eligibility for the KSA. Many of his colleagues did gain the KSA hence his need to add one to his group?

There is another QSA entry for him on WO100/203p150 for the Seaforth's Mounted Infantry. Here he gained the three state clasps, CC OFT & Tr.

Based on this, I think his entitlement should only be to the QSA with 5 clasps and (sadly) no KSA.

Best wishes
David

Hello Anthony,
The War Office did issue a pair for the Great War, but, they were not in the habit of issuing clasps on behalf of the Kaiser's Government!
The Sudwest-Afrika 1901 clasp was worn on their (the hun!) Colonial Service Medal and the other three were all worn on their South West Africa Campaign Medal, so that is two differant medals, they could not be worn together on one medal, moreover, you have a Kalahari 1908, it is a shame it is not a Kalahari 1907, because it would worth a kings ransome on its own, however, if the clasps are original ones and I suspect that they could well be, they are not without value.
Regards Frank

Anthony,
I forgot to say that I checked the roll in WO100/18 and this confirms his service in the Sudan and his presence on both the Expedition to Khartoum and the Atbara Campaign in 1898.
Kind regards Frank
