Thanks Frank, this is superb stuff.

The next question has to be - was there a Gloucester's Battalion based in Ceylon which provided a company?

How many are on the roll? A Company was approx 100 to 150 depending.

Best,

Justin

Hello Justin,
Yes, the whole Gloucester Regt is very interesting all the way through its history, from its formation to 1940 and in particular April 1951 and the Boer War, of course, very interesting too, from Natal in 1899 to St Helena.
You get all the Active Service Sections attached to Volunteer Companies and then you find there are men in the Volunteer Company of the 3rd Battalion attached to the 4th Battalion for service on St Helena etc.
However, Brian's medal is very rare indeed.
Look its way past my bedtime, so talk to you tomorrow perhaps, there are 100 men on the medal roll including a single bronze one to a camp follower.
Kind regards Frank

Frank

You are a star and hope you have a deserved rest after posting all this amazing info!

As I said I was given this medal only the second I have ever been given besides my own 4 issued from the SADF for forfeiting 2 years plus of my life, for a cause not many of us understood at the time...but that is another story!

I have tried to find one on the DNW site and there does not appear to have been one that has passed through their auctions, I might be wrong?

Thanks again all for the positive feedback regards this medal.

Regards
Brian

Brian

I hope that you are now well and truly bitten by the Boer War bug! You have got some star items in that part of your collection and, hopefully, there will be many more in future.

Regards
Brett

Good morning Justin,
As far as I am aware, volunteers from the Militia serving on Ceylon, together with other local volunteers, resident on Ceylon, formed this unit and were attached to the 2nd Battalion in South Africa.
I do remember looking at some memoranda many years ago at the then Public Record Office.
Kind regards Frank

Hello Brian,

Superb medal.

Brian, Frank beat me to it but I have all three roll pages on nice large A3 pages if you want them. Let me know.

Cheers
