My maternal grandfather's medals list specific locations (ie. Pardegerg, Relief of Kimberly) whereas my paternal grandfathers medals and clasps are for Orange Free State, Cape Colony, 1901 and 1902 (he also has three clasps for service in India). Why the difference in nomenclature?

The award of clasps to the QSA depended on where the person served and whether they were involved in any specific engagements. Have a look at this page, it lists all the clasps and why they were awarded.
