Frank's post elswhere about the anniversary of the Battle of Paardeberg reminded me of an apparently unloved QSA with 'Relief of Kimberley' and 'Paardeberg' clasps, which languishes in a drawer not far from where I live. It is not in bad condition, except for a wobbly suspension and a partly erased inscription that reads:

58-4- ?Pte - M Thompson Yorkshire Regiment

I know that partly erased naming is offensive to many collectors, but in this instance there might be another, more serious reason for it to be banished. Is the medal really a dud?

Good afternoon Brett,
I looked at the main roll of the 1st Battalion and I think that this man would be 5894 Pte G M Thompson

Thank you, Frank. So there really is nothing wrong with the medal, except for some damage to the naming. I think I will rescue it from its present home and try to find it a more caring one.

Regards
Brett

A very agreeable course of action, you are saving that QSA! :)

In the past I've found lots of different reasons why QSAs have partially erased naming: a mistake by the Orderly Room Clerk when writing the medal roll, so the Mint then get the man's name or initials wrong; a mistake by the Mint which the recipient doesn't like, and on more than one occasion a medal being continually rubbed by a widow or mother as a kind of worry bead or remembrance...

Good Morning Everyone......

Re. Official Re-Naming or Replacement.

Here is a situation where I think that if he had returned the first medal like he should have, the name would have been removed and a new name put on the medal.

Mike
