Hello Iain

Have you seen the set on FindmyPast for his Anglo-Boer War service?

Would love to see the pictures from the Anglo-Boer War if you have time.

Okay, you don't need to, thats cool, did not actually bother looking, as you said that his papers had been destroyed, assumed you knew all about it!
I have to say, he does look to be quite a character, looked in WO100, his number was 1853?
Now all you need to do is find those medals, hope your bank balance can handle it?
I'm pleased for you again regards Frank

By the way, its not my site, so you must thank David, I am sure he will read this in due course, moreover, I think we should thank Meurig for looking in WO97!

Blimey, where did that come from! Amazing, thanks. It is him, I was going to dig out some more stuff I have as I was fairly sure his number was 1854 from his entries in the London Gazette which I could upload if I have not used up my allocation! Still finding my way round your wonderful site and will look up the reference numbers. Thanks very much, just looked up the reference numbers and I didn't know that some of the Burnt Records had been salvaged. How can I thank you!
Regards, Iain

Hello Meurig, how nice of you to reply and thanks for the tip. I'll look over the weekend. The picture I'm about to post is during his South African presence which is a copy of not very good quality. I'm looking for the original and wil fire it on then, along with any others when I've dug them out. I hope I was in order in copying his medals from here and post it up too to validate the comparison with my picture of him. I also tracked down an entry in the HLI journal of his obituary. Thanks again, regards, Iain

Hello again Frank, thanks again for your reply. My records say that he is 1854 Acting WO 1 which is on his London Gazette entry posted. I hope I was in order copying the RSM's group so kindly provided. Sincere thanks to you, Muerig and David

Hello again,
I think I saw him as 1853 Sergeant 1st HLI attached from Volunteer Company in WO100/202 for the QSA, but, it really does not matter.
Regards again Frank

Hello Iain

Thanks for the pictures - the centre one you posted is from WW1 not the Anglo-Boer War, lovely image all the same.

He had three distinct periods of service and five army numbers at least:

1. Regular service - HLI (number unknown), battle of Tel-el-Kebir 1882
2. Volunteer battalion HLI (number unknown), 8153 Sgt Volunteer Company - Anglo-Boer War
3. Territorial service HLI (1854) - WW1 (re-numbered 311131 into Northumberland Fusiliers)

Cracking medal group and history.
