Good Morning Everyone......

Yesterday I attended the local Calgary Gun Show.......

My prize purchase for the day was a Father and Son grouping of medals (13 in all)......

Now here is the question......

They ALL the silver medals have been chrome plated and the bronze ones it has been suggested are gold.......

I have been running the following questions on BMF with a variety of answers.....

What is your opinion on plating??????

Do you think that it will affect the value of the medals??????

Remember we are looking at the man not the medals......

Mike

P.S. Here are the groups:

Hello Mike,
The only problem I would have here is with the crome and gilt, or indeed gold plate, not so much on the WW2 medals, though, as South African stars were plated, but, I just think it looks wrong on Victorian medals.
With the older group, when you refer to "interesting naming" what do you mean, is it because of the same number and what is the exact naming on these medals?
To answer the two questions, I would say that I don't like plating, unless issued that way and with regards to value, I really don't know, but, I do think if there are more people who look at plating in the way I do, then value may be an issue as those people may choose another group which is not plated.
However, many people, like me, for example, do like good cavalry groups and it is the recipient that they would be buying as well as the medals, its always nice to see "battle" clasps on medals to the cavalry, rather than just state clasps.
Glad you had a good time at the fair (gun show is a bit too American for me! :) )
Best regards Frank

Mike,
Quite forgot to add, although I am not a navy man, the second group is a really impressive one regarding his extensive service around the globe!
I am, however, a cavalry man and I do like all those old contemptables/august men who went to war just as their forebears did ninety nine years before and Parkyn did just that, his Index Card shows arrival in France on the 16th August 1914 and confirms his second service number as D/20302.
Regards again Frank

Hi Frank what I meant was the 6DG before his regimental number on the War and Victory medal, I have not seen that before......

Yes Gun Show is very American, it was actually called an Arms and Armour Show in the advertising.......

Of all the dealers there I would have said that it was about 50% arms and 50% militaria.....

Hi Again Frank......

I guess that I am a little bias as I served both in the Navy and in a Cavalry unit so therefore it touches both bases......

Since he was in F and F in August of 1914 I guess his Mons Bar is missing I will have to find one.....

This is the third group that I have picked up with a QSA that is also an Old Contemptable in the last 2 months......
