David,

I tried a few name variations and broader searches but found no relevant matches.

Describes as:

Queen’s South Africa Medal, Bronze, no bar, Syce Ismail, Assistant Adjutant General of Transport, Army Headquarters, who served as personal Syce to Lt Col Wickham CB, Indian Staff Corps.

It is not clear how the medal is named.

Liverpool are asking nearly £500, R10,700.

A medal to a man who may have held the bridle of the horse that belonged to the Colonel at the battle of Talana & later in the siege at Ladysmith.

"Officially script engraved: “Syce Ismail A. A. G. T. A. H. Qrs”

From a previous note on page 6 of these ramblings

"I have done some work on the bronze QSA to a Private Servant Thelenvram. He appears on WO100/295 p 334 as a servant to Lt Col William James Richard Wickham ISC who was at Talana. Romantically I would like to think of Wickham going into battle with his servant by his side. Obviously no proof but could Thelenham been there? Possibly he followed his master into Ladysmith. Now who can find a photograph of him with his servants?
Thelenvam's medal was sold for GBP 28 in 1977. To confuse the issue he was also issued a medal named to Bearer Tulsi Ram off WO 100/296 p11 ( Englishman's difficulty in writing down the vernacular ) Wickham's other servant was Ismail."
Looking for Salutries, Salootries and Veterinary Duffadars.
I collect primarily QSAs to Indian Recipients.
