This is directed towards Brett to let him know that the miniature medals for Herbert Bottomley are in the next Kaplan auction, 11 Sep 12.

The details are:

Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG); QSA (clasps Rel of M, Tugela Heights; Rel of L, TVL, OFS) KSA (clasps 1901, 1902); War medal; Allied Victory Medal.

Herbert Bottomley was born at Umbillo in Natal in 1866. He was educated at Diocesan College (Bishops) in Cape Town. In 1896 he was a member of the Rand Reform Movement. He was one of the founders of the Imperial Light Horse. During the Anglo-Boer War he took part in the Battles of Colenso, Spionkop, Vaal Kranz and Pieter’s Hill prior to the Relief of Ladysmith. On 12 January 1900 Lord Kitchener promoted him to Lieutenant-Colonel and appointed him to command the Imperial Light Horse. During WW I he served as Second in Command of the 9th SA Infantry. After the main withdrawal of the SA Forces from German East Africa he relinquished his commission on 5 March 1917. He died in 1926. A small black and white photo accompanies the lot. Medals mounted for wear.

Estimate: R 1,300.

A lovely double relief combination.

Best wishes
David

Thank you for pointing out this lot. I think I will save my money and buy the full-size group when next it is on offer! "If wishes were horses ...." springs to mind again. Perhaps it should become the motto for the less fortunate members of this forum!

If memory serves Bottomley became an Inspector of Mines or something to do with the Police post WWI. I have correspondence signed by him relating to a QSA recipient of mine, Hayward, (SAC) who was charged with theft of gold bars and which Bottomley investigated.

I wonder where the "big ones" are?

Hello Brett,
A very good "motto" and one I have already had to use elsewhere on this forum just a couple of days ago! :(
