Hi all -- I am an occasional lurker here, not often researching much outside of Korean War and WWII, but I've recently come across this KSA medal that is giving me trouble. It appears to have the original impressing erased and instead has engraved (upside down, I believe):

62 Pte A. C. Butler The J'H'Burg R. R.

I have not found anyone on rolls that I would consider a match. I might get a 62 A. Butler (I think he was George Town Guard) or under another number an A. C. Butler for Johannesburg Mounted Rifles, but I don't see why the "R. R." would be such a deliberate choice if that were the case. I have asked in a couple other places with similar ideas, but nothing definitive, so here I am to inquire.

Thanks,
Robert

From memory the only QSA's prefixed with "Johannesburg" were the ubiquitous Johannesburg Mounted Rifles and the lesser-known Johannesburg Mounted Police. I think your Mr Butler was a bit of a chancer. There was an Arthur Butler who served with the JMR but his number was 2232 and he does not seem to have qualified for a KSA.

As you have correctly surmised, the medal is very much renamed.

Regards

Rory

RCM_collection,

Thank you for the very clear pictures of this KSA. As Rory says, there was no regiment called the Johannesburg RR that we know of. As you have noted, the medal is renamed.

Best wishes
David
