Lot 60 in the Spink Centenary Sale was a Mafeking siege QSA to Conductor T Hornby.

It sold for a hammer price of £600. Liverpool Medals advertised the medal in February 2000 for £895. It was sold again by City Coins in 2003 as not entitled.

The medal is unusual but not incorrect in that it does not have a unit.

I have never been able to verify this medal. The nearest I have come is 1127 Sub Conductor T Hornby on WO100/ 216p167, issued a no clasp medal on 8 January 1902. He was attached to the 13th Battery, RHA..

He is also listed on the 13th RFA roll (WO100/140p177) as a non-enlisted man, again with a no clasp medal.

There was no one called Hornby in the siege as far as I can determine so I have added this medal to the 'not-entitled section' of the Mafeking book.

I am interested to learn if this medal is still extant.

Hi David
The medal still exist, but without the DoM clasp. It was mounted on a disk to a Mafeking Town Guard.
