On its way to me after the long weekend will be this medal to Pte. A. Ackroyd of the 2nd Battalion, West Yorks.

This unfortunate was Killed in a serious railway accident near Pretoria on my wedding anniversary (admittedly the year is somewhat different..) - 7 June 1901.

Should be an interesting chap to research although I have failed to find his christian name in my initial research. Not even the Register of Soldiers Effects on Ancestry has proved fruitful... Any pointers would be appreciated.

Regards

Rory

Rory, I can go over to Keighley Library and look for a report of his death, and maybe a death notice in the local paper.

The roll page WO100/189p175 confirms his single Transvaal clasp. There is another man on the same page with a single Transvaal clasp but the majority earned clasps in the relief of Ladysmith so he must have joined them as a later draft?

No service papers, as expected.
